The importance of indoor air quality during the coronavirus pandemic.

Here’s what you need to know about air cleaners and air scrubbers.

air purifier

Much is left to learn about the coronavirus. Until then, all of us must do our part to keep our family, friends, employees and neighbors safe. Case counts are expected to increase with the onset of colder weather. With families spending more time indoors in the fall and winter months here in Harrisburg, PA, many of our customers are asking about air scrubbers. Here’s what you need to know:

  • When indoor ventilation is poor or outdoor air is limited, air scrubbers can be effective in removing contaminants and particles from the air.
  • Air scrubbers release negative ions to combat small particles in the air and on surfaces. Air scrubbers also use HEPA filters to catch small microns. These differ from normal HVAC filters which catch large particles.
  • The use of air cleaners alone cannot ensure safety, particularly where there is poor ventilation and pollutant sources are present. When used in combination with other protective equipment like masks and precautions like social distancing, or quarantining in one room of the house when sick, air scrubbers can help reduce airborne contaminants in the air.
  • In addition to reducing the likelihood of germs and virus particles from traveling from room to room during high-risk times such as these, they can also be used yearound to reduce pollutants and germs during flu or allergy season.
  • The use of an air scrubber also extends the life of your HVAC system.

For more information on air scrubbers and COVID-19, visit the EPA’s website.

Duct-mounted air scrubbers and portable air scrubbing units available.

We offer two types of air scrubbing technology: portable air scrubbing units and duct-mounted air scrubbers. Our customer service representatives will recommend a solution based on the size of your home or office and your unique situation.

indoor air quality

Clean, high-quality air has always been part of the MT Building Services mission.

Air purification filters, portable air scrubbers, and HVAC maintenance contribute to clean air.

When we opened our doors in 2007, we had a vision of a small business that prioritized the best interest of its customers and what’s best for the future of our planet. Part of our mission was always to help our communities in Harrisburg, Hershey, Camp Hill and Mechanicsburg, PA have clean, high-quality air.

Annual maintenance plans to keep your HVAC unit in good condition.

While clean air begins with the right HVAC equipment for your building, ductwork, and habits, it takes regular maintenance to keep high-quality air in your home or office. Filter replacement, emptying of the water condensation unit, and ductwork cleaning keep a heating and cooling system up and running for the long term and help to avoid costly repairs or replacements. We believe HVAC maintenance should be affordable. Our team of HVAC experts, who have a homebase in Hummelstown, PA, offer two clean and tune options. $199 per year includes one visit in early summer and once in fall; $149 per year includes one visit per year.

Call our team at 717-525-9665 to learn more about maintenance options or to schedule an appointment.

Aerus air scrubber equipment for sale for your home, office or small business.

Today, in the age of the coronavirus pandemic, that mission for helping our residential and commercial clients achieve clean air has driven us to provide Aerus air scrubbing filters, portable Aerus air scrubbers, and PPE for sale.

According to the EPA, while air scrubber filters or portable units are not enough alone to protect people from COVID-19, this technology can help reduce virus particles and other airborne contaminants from the air in a room or building. Speak to our HVAC experts to determine the best air cleaning system for your home or office. They will ask you a series of questions on the size of your space, your existing HVAC unit, and the existing ductwork to determine the best solution to do your part to keep your customers, employees and family safe.

Do air scrubbers help stop the spread of viruses?

Here’s what you need to know about installing an air purification system during the coronavirus pandemic.

clean office air

Indoor air quality has been a priority for us at MT Building Services since we began in 2007. With the COVID-19 pandemic impacting the world—including here in the greater region of Harrisburg, PA—it’s more important now than ever before. You may have seen restaurants and other businesses installing air filters for their small commercial buildings in order to make customers feel more comfortable dining in. Air purification systems can be impactful for the offices of dentists and orthodontists, doctors, hair salons, spas, insurance offices, boutiques, and any other business which predominantly serves customers indoors.

Whether seeking an air purifier for your home or small commercial building, here’s some information on air scrubbers and air purification systems to help you in your decision to move forward with installation.

What is an air purifier or air scrubber?

Air purifiers or air scrubbers are isolated systems or additions to your existing HVAC unit to filter out dust, pollen, pollutants, and particles similar to coronavirus droplets. At MT Building Services, we offer filters that can be added to your existing HVAC systems for indoor air quality you can feel good about.

How do air scrubber filters help reduce the spread of viruses?

We’ve long heard from customers who install an air scrubber that they’ve noticed a difference during winter cold and flu season; when one family member is sick, the air scrubber filter prevents the germs from spreading through the air to the entire house. The same is true for commercial buildings. With an air scrubber or air purification system, air is cleaned while traveling from office or room to the other— reducing the risk of air particles traveling throughout the building.

Air scrubbers and filters capture 99.97 percent of particles that are 0.3 micron in diameter. The coronavirus itself is smaller, but the droplets (think coughing, sneezing, talking, breathing) are larger and are captured by air scrubbers. It’s important to note that the air must first travel through the air scrubbers to be effectively cleaned. Air filters won’t help stop the spread of coronavirus if you are in the same room as someone who has been infected, but can prevent the spread in air traveling from room to room.

What can I expect during an air scrubber installation?

n95 mask

Our HVAC experts in central PA will install your air scrubber with the same professionalism and care as they do any HVAC maintenance or repair visit. You can expect our technicians to arrive on time, answer any questions you have, and quickly get to work. Furthermore, during the COVID-19 pandemic, our team will wear masks, boot covers and gloves while in and around your home or office. We have PPE available for sale in bulk including, N95 masks, 3-ply disposable masks, gloves and hand sanitizer.

How much does an air scrubber by Aerus cost?

The cost of an air scrubber by Aerus typically starts at $1,000 dependent on the specifications of your building and existing ductwork system. We’ll ask a few questions while scheduling your appointment to understand the size of your home or office. We’ll then discuss how many air scrubber filters we recommend for the size of the space. Air scrubber installation will also be based on the quantity of filters being added to your HVAC system. For those who would prefer a portable air scrubbing unit, we do have portable units available for purchase for $850.

To schedule your air scrubber installation, call us at 717-525-9665.

7 Cheap and Easy Ways to Save Energy this Spring and Summer

lake

It’s still relatively chilly here in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, but warmer weather will be here before you know it. With that in mind, it is a good idea to look ahead and figure out ways to save now so you can just relax and enjoy your summer later on. There are countless ways to save energy in the summer. While some can be expensive, there are also plenty of free or cheap ways for you to lower your energy bills. Here are seven of the best tips from MT Heating and Cooling on doing so.

Be Smart with Your Thermostat

Chances are, you’re not home all day. When your family isn’t home, you end up wasting energy too cool a home that no one is around to enjoy. With this in mind, you should give your air conditioner a break during the day by turning the thermostat back. This way it won’t run as long or use quite so much energy.

Don’t turn it off completely, though. You will lose too much cool air that will have to be replaced later. Just a few degrees can make a significant difference. Even if you are home and you can stand the air being a bit hotter, setting your thermostat to a higher temperature (in summer) can help you save. You may also want to consider investing in a programmable thermostat as it can make saving this way easier and more convenient. Talk to MT Heating and Cooling in Johnstown, PA to learn more.

Make Sure Your Home Has Good Circulation

bedroom

If your air conditioner is using energy to create cool air, you want to make sure that air is spreading through your Dauphin County home so you can enjoy it. Therefore, MT Heating and Cooling reccommends paying close attention to the circulation in your home. Here are some tips to help promote airflow in your home.

  • Make sure vents aren’t blocked.
  • Make sure vents are clean.
  • Change your air filter regularly.
  • Get your air ducts cleaned every 8-10 years.
  • Use fans.
  • Open windows when the weather is nice.

By ensuring proper airflow, you can keep your family comfortable and your energy bills low.

Close Your Curtains When the Sun is High

Sunlight will naturally warm your home. This is great news in the winter as it helps you save on energy bills. However, in the summer, it means making your air conditioner work harder and use even more energy to cool your home. With this in mind, you will want to block the sun during the day to help save some energy. Close your curtains, blinds, or shudders.

Make Sure Your Home is Sealed and Insulated

If there are any cracks or holes in your home, warm air from outside can leak in making your home warmer. Then your air conditioner has to run longer and use more energy to reach your desired temperature. MT Heating and Cooling recommends taking the time to make your home is sealed. Check around your windows and doors for leaks and seal them if you find any.

It is also helpful to ensure that your home is insulated. Areas that aren’t insulated, like your basement and attic, can also store heat and make the rest of your home hotter when air leaks out. Insulating these areas help prevent leaks, keeps your home comfortable, and saves energy.

Be Smart with Appliances

Your appliances and devices can also use energy and add heat to your home. Being smart about how you use them can help you save. Use your appliances only as often as you have to and unplug them when they aren’t in use. Be sure to turn off lights when you aren’t in the room as well. You will also want to keep your water usage to a minimum.

Go On An Outing

As mentioned before, when you aren’t home, you can turn your thermostat back to save some energy. With this in mind, it is a good idea to get out of the house. You can visit somewhere interesting, go out to eat, or even just hang out in your yard. Dining out or grilling prevents adding extra heat to your Johnstown, PA home. You can have fun with your friends or family and save energy on your heating bills while doing so.

Schedule Maintenance

Finally, it is important to keep up with maintenance on your air conditioner. Doing so helps minimize issues that can cost you more and give your peace of mind that your HVAC system will work when you need it most. MT Heating and Cooling can help you accomplish this. You should schedule maintenance for your HVAC system 1-2 times per year. You can contact MT Heating and Cooling by visiting our website here: https://www.mtheatingandcooling.com/ or by calling (717)-525-9665. Together we can keep your air conditioner running efficiently so you can be comfortable and save money.

Is It Time to Replace My Furnace?

candle

When it comes to winter in Dauphin County, you rely on your furnace to keep you and your family warm. Yet, your furnace doesn’t last forever. Eventually, you will have to replace it with a new and more efficient furnace. When you are ready, MT Heating and Cooling in Johnstown, PA is ready to help, but how do you know when that is? Below are nine signs that signal it may be time to replace your furnace.

How Old Is It?

One of the best ways to figure out if your furnace needs to be replaced is its age. Most furnaces last about 15-30 years. However, it also depends on what type of furnace you have and how well you take care of it. If you still have your user manual, you may be able to find the lifespan of your particular furnace somewhere in its contents.

How Many Repairs Has It Needed in the Past Year?

Ask yourself how often you have called MT Heating and Cooling in the past year to make a repair. If it’s more than a few times, it may be time to start planning for a replacement. If you don’t know where to start, call on the knowledgeable professionals at MT Heating and Cooling for help.

Does It Keep Your Family Warm?

Your furnace’s job is to keep your family warm. If it is not doing its job, there is something wrong. Whether your Dauphin County home just can’t seem to get warm or if you notice uneven heating, MT Heating, and Cooling can help. We can help you repair or completely replace your furnace.

Have You Noticed Poor Indoor Air Quality?

central pa woman cough

If your furnace isn’t working properly, it can lead to poor air quality. You may notice excess dust around your home and your family coughing more often. It may seem more difficult to breath and those with respiratory issues may struggle with symptoms.

While these issues can be caused by something simple like a clogged filter, it can also signal more serious issues with your furnace. MT Heating and Cooling recommends checking your filter first. If changing or cleaning it does not work, there may be a more serious issue that needs tending to.

Does It Run Irregular Cycles?

If your furnace is on its way out, it may struggle to keep up with warming your Johnstown home. It may run more often than normal or turn on and off more frequently.

Have Your Energy Bills Been Rising?

Another very strong sign that your furnace is struggling is rising energy bills. When it can’t keep up with heating your home, it runs longer and uses more energy. Then you end up paying more to keep your home comfortable. If this is the case, it is important to take action so you don’t end up wasting energy or paying more than necessary.

Does It Make Strange Noises?

If your furnace starts making strange noises, it may signal a serious issue. Sounds you may hear include banging, buzzing, whistling, rattling, or humming. Be sure to call MT Heating and Cooling to get it checked out, repaired, or replaced if necessary.

Do You See Rust or Cracks Around Your Furnace?

Along with sounds, you may also notice visible damage to your furnaces such as rust or cracks. This is a very good sign your furnace needs to be replaced.

Ways to Help Keep Your Basement Warm This Winter in Dauphin County

central pa architect

There are many reasons you may want to keep your basement warmer. Whether you spend time there, want to protect your belongings, or just want to help decrease the amount of heat lost through your basement, MT Heating and Cooling can help. Below you will find various solutions with different price ranges and effectiveness that you can consider.

Insulate

Insulation helps create a barrier to keep the heat in your Dauphin County home and the cold out. This helps you keep your basement warm as well as helping you save energy. When the warm air stays in your Johnstown home, your HVAC system doesn’t have to keep running to replace it.

When it comes to insulation, there are multiple kinds that each work best in different situations. MT Building Services can provide expert installation of various insulation types including spray foam, blow-in, spider, fiberglass, rigid, radiant banner, and rock wool.

Add Carpet

Carpet or other floorings can also work as a form of insulation. It also feels nicer to walk on than cold concrete.  You can choose something as budget-friendly as throw rugs or you can invest in higher quality flooring. Before you do, however, consider the condition of your basement. If it floods often, you don’t want to invest a fortune on nice flooring if there is a chance of it getting destroyed. On the other hand, if your basement stays dry and you are looking to make the space more livable, adding nice flooring is a great idea.

Upgrade Your Windows and Doors

window

Doors and windows are likely one of the main places your home is losing warm air. You can help minimize this issue by ensuring that your doors and windows are properly sealed. Inspect the area and see if you feel any cold air leaking in. If possible, MT Heating and Cooling also recommends upgrading your doors and windows to more energy-efficient models. Curtains or blinds can also help provide insulation. The more you invest in, the more energy-efficient your Dauphin County home will be.

Add Heating

Finally, you can look into adding heat to your basement. Like insulation, you have many different options. Here are some of the most popular solutions.

Add Vents

If you currently have a forced-air HVAC system, one option you may want to consider is adding ductwork and vents to your current system. The overall cost can vary. It all depends on the layout of your basement, how much ductwork you need, and the type of ductwork.

Heated Flooring

Radiant floor heat uses tubes or wiring embedded in your floors. The tubing or wiring carries a heated medium through your floors to warm your basement. If you are building a new home, this option is fairly easy to install. However, it can be difficult and expensive to add to a preexisting floor.

Electric Baseboard Heaters

Electric baseboard heaters are compact and easy to install. They are commonly used for supplemental heat. They are commonly installed under windows to help counteract the cold air coming in. Their efficiency depends on how many you use and how often you run it.

Pellet Stove

inferno

A pellet stove burns compressed wood or biomass pellet to create heat. They are efficient as long as your basement is sealed and well insulated. They are easy to control and don’t require a chimney. However, you do have to continually refill them with pellets and clean them regularly.

Electric Space Heater

Electric space heaters are one of the most affordable options. However, most can’t heat a large space. If you are just looking to make a small section of your basement more bearable and don’t have a large budget, an electric space heater is a viable solution.

Ductless Systems

Ductless mini-split HVAC systems are a common solution for heating small to medium areas of a home or business building. They are efficient, easy to install, and don’t require any ducts. If this sounds like the best solution for your home, contact the professionals at MT Heating and Cooling to learn more.

9 Helpful Solutions for Warm and Cool Spots in Your Home

When it comes to your Dauphin County home, you want to maximize your comfort. You want your air to be clean and the temperature to be even throughout. However, this isn’t always an easy task. If your HVAC system runs into a problem, it can cause uneven heating in your home. Fear not, however, because MT Heating and Cooling in Johnstown, PA is here to help. Below you will find nine tips and solutions for avoiding warm and cool spots throughout your home.

Check Your Filter

If your filter is clogged with dirt, dust, and other debris, the air your furnace or air conditioner creates may not be able to pass through. Then it can’t get out into your home to keep you and your family comfortable. If you notice warm and cool spots in your home, this is a great place to start. Sometimes, all you have to do is simply clean or replace your filter.

Ensure Your Vents Are Not Blocked

When you place furniture near your air vents or return air ducts, this can also trap the air. If you notice a warm or cool spot, check the vents in the area and make sure they are clear.

Check For Drafts

If your windows or doors aren’t properly sealed, the hot air outside can come in or the warm air in your Dauphin county home can leak out. This causes warm or cool spots. If you notice that the areas around your doors and windows are usually colder, you may want to invest in more energy-efficient ones. Additionally, buying blinds or curtains can also help insulate your windows.

Adjust Ceiling Fans

The direction that your ceiling fan is rotating can also affect the air in your home. Your fan should turn counter-clockwise during summer to provide a cool downward breeze. On the other hand, the fan should slowly turn clockwise in the winter to help distribute warm air evenly.

Set Thermostat Fan to “On”

Most thermostats have two fan settings, “Auto” and “On.” “Auto” means that your fan turns on and off with your furnace or air conditioner. “On” keeps your fan running constantly. This way it is constantly filtering the air in your Dauphin County home and can help heat your home more evenly.

Insulate Your Home

Every room in your home may not be connected to your HVAC system. This is very common for attics and basement. However, if these areas are not properly insulated, you could be losing your conditioned air in these areas. If you think this is the case, talk to MT Heating and Cooling about insulating your home.

Repair or Add Ducts

If your air ducts are damaged, you could be losing heat through leaks. Then some of the conditioned air never even makes it into your home. This can also cause your system to run longer and your energy bills to rise. Contact MT Heating and cooling to help ensure that your air ducts are in good shape.

Install a Home Zoning System

A home zoning system can give you even more control over the air in your home. It divides your Dauphin County home into sections using dampers in your air ducts. Then each zone can be controlled individually. This allows you to direct the air mainly to the rooms you are occupying so you can be comfortable. It can help you save energy and money as well. Talk to MT Heating and Cooling to learn more.
